This paper contains a characterization of compartmental singular systems in discrete and in continuous time. Further the author defines equivalence notions for discrete and continuous time singular systems in terms of so-called generalized permutation matrices. In terms of these equivalence notions, the author derives equivalence results between compartmental and asymptotically stable positive systems. The paper is related to recent work by \textit{A. Astolfi} and \textit{P. Colaneri} [Linear Algebra Appl. 390, 329--343 (2004; Zbl 1060.93030)].
