The three-dimensional fluid flow past a smooth bounded body is considered for a time-periodic body force \(F\). The authors prove existence of a time-periodic strong solution, uniqueness of this solution in the class of weak solutions satisfying an energy inequality with some further requirements for the pressure, regularity, and asymptotic decaying if the exterior domain is of class \(\mathcal{C}^{2,\alpha}\) (\(0 < \alpha <1\)) for sufficiently small \(F\) that is of divergence form and satisfies some further conditions. If \(F\) does not depend on time, then the solution coincides with Finn's so-called physically reasonable solution [cf. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 19, 363--406 (1965; Zbl 0149.44606)]. The analysis commences with preliminary results on the heat equation. It follows existence and uniqueness for Stokes problem, especially with time-periodic right-hand side. Finally, the nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations are considered.
