Let \(L\) be an ample holomorphic line bundle over an \(n\)-dimensional connected projective algebraic manifold \(M\). Denote by \(d\) the degree of the image \(M_m\) of \(M\) by the Kodaira embedding in the projective space \({\mathbb P}(V_m)\). The author proves an obstruction to Chow-semistability. By using this result, a theorem of \textit{S. K. Donaldson} [J. Differ. Geom. 59, No. 3, 479--522 (2001; Zbl 1052.32017)] is generalized. This generalization is a crucial step to the approach of the stability problem for a polarized algebraic manifold endowed with a Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature. This study will be continued in a forthcoming paper. The author remarks that asymptotic Chow-stability implies the asymptotic stability in the sense of Hilbert schemes.
