Let \(A^2_\lambda\), \(\lambda\in (-1, \infty)\), be the weighted Bergman space on the upper half-plane with weight \(\mu_\lambda(z)=C_\lambda(\text{Im\,}z)^\lambda\), where \(C_\lambda\) is a normalizing constant. In this paper, the authors study Toeplitz operators \(T_a^{(\lambda)}\) acting on \(A^2_\lambda\) whose symbols \(a=a(\theta)\) depend only on \(\theta=\arg z\). The hyperbolic case in the title stands for this property of symbols. The other two cases, namely the elliptic and parabolic cases, were studied by the same authors separately in the papers [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 50, No. 2, 217--253 (2004; Zbl 1076.47020)] and [J. Oper. Theory (to appear)]. The key observation, which leads to several results in the present paper, is that \(T_a^{(\lambda)}\) is unitary equivalent to a certain multiplication operator. Using such a representation, the authors derive a star-product formula for the Berezin symbols of operators \(T_a^{(\lambda)}\). Also, the authors prove several sufficient or necessary conditions for the boundedness of \(T_a^{(\lambda)}\) with \(\lambda\geq 0\) and provide a number of illustrating examples. The results show that boundedness properties (for unbounded symbols) depend on the behavior of certain means of a symbol, rather than that of the symbol itself. It is also shown that the set of parameters \(\lambda\geq 0\) for which \(T_a^{(\lambda)}\) (with \(a\) fixed) is bounded should be one of the forms \([0, \infty)\), \([0, \nu)\) or \([0, \nu]\) and, more interestingly, each case can actually happen. Finally, the authors study the limit set (as \(\lambda\to \infty\)) of the continuous spectrum of \(T_a^{(\lambda)}\) when the symbol is piecewise continuous. They show that such a limit set is precisely the union of the range of \(a\) and the line segments connecting the ``end'' points at jump discontinuities of the symbol under consideration. Some other related results are also included.
