In recent times the subject of cosmic strings has reached great importance in the study of cosmology. Self-gravitating strings from the point of view of nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) form an interesting area of investigation. There are also many fascinating modern ideas connected with the same. Here the authors discuss the cosmic strings with an arbitrary gauge-invariant Lagrangian, \(\Phi(F)\), \(F=F_{\mu\nu} F^{\mu\nu}\). Field equations with regularity conditions, radial electro-magnetic fields, azimuthal e.m. fields and the longitudinal e.m. fields are dealt with in detail in separate sections. The final sixth section is on concluding remarks including the emphasis that in the nonlinear theory there is a clear manifestation of the absence of electro-magnetic duality, that is so vital in the Maxwell's theory. On the whole, the consideration of the static cylindrically symmetric NED -- Einstein equations with arbitrary gauge-invariant NED -- Lagrangian \(\Phi(F)\), has led to very useful insights into the all-important, current active topic of the cosmic strings.
