The book under review is an extended second edition of the book ``The topology of torus actions on symplectic manifolds'' published by Birkhäuser in [Progress in Mathematics 93 (1991; Zbl 0726.57029)]. The new edition (published in 2004) has the new title ``Torus actions on symplectic manifolds'' and it is really a different book. As in the first edition, symplectic manifolds and torus actions are investigated and the discussion is still focused on convexity and Duistermaat-Heckman theorems. However, the material and references have been updated, the book is written more carefully now and contains more theorems, examples and new exercises. Also, in the second edition of the book, one finds proofs left as exercises to the reader in the first edition. Moreover, the author has added an index and a new chapter on integrable systems where as an example of use of the results of the book, the author describes torus actions on certain moduli spaces. The second edition of the book includes the following eight chapters: I. Smooth Lie group actions on manifolds, II. Symplectic manifolds. III. Symplectic and Hamiltonian group actions, IV. Morse theory for Hamiltonians. V. Moduli spaces of flat connections. VI. Equivariant cohomology and the Duistermaat-Heckman theorem. VII. Toric manifolds, VIII. Hamiltonian circle actions on manifolds of dimension 4. The book should become a good standard reference on torus actions on symplectic manifolds.
