Most of the properties of the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category follow from the cube axiom : If in a homotopy commutative cube, all vertical faces are homotopy pullbacks and the bottom face is a homotopy pushout, then the top face is a homotopy pushout. In this paper, the authors introduce a weaker form of the cube axiom. First, a homotopy commutative diagram \((A- B - C- D)\) is called a homotopy pushout extension if \(D\) is a homotopy retract of the homotopy pushout of \(A\to B\) and \(A\to C\). The weaker form of the cube axiom says that under the same hypothesis, the top face is a homotopy pushout extension. The authors prove that this weaker form is sufficient to develop an LS category notion. However, the authors do not know if the dual of this weaker axiom holds or not in the category of topological spaces.
