Let \(A\) be an \(n\times n\) matrix over a field \(F\) (or more generally over an integral domain) and denote the classical adjoint by \(A^{\ast}\). Note that \((C^{-1}AC)^{\ast}=C^{-1}A^{\ast}C\) for any invertible matrix \(C\), and that \(A^{\ast}\) has rank \(0\) or \(1\) whenever \(\det A=0\). The authors show how to compute the rational canonical form of \(A^{\ast}\) from the rational form of \(A\). Only the case where \(\text{rank}A=n-1\) (and \(\text{rank} A^{\ast}=1\)) is of interest, and there are two kinds of form depending on whether \(0\) is or is not a simple eigenvalue of \(A\). They also show that if \(A\) is idempotent, nilpotent or unipotent, then the same is true, respectively, for \(A^{\ast}\).
