An orthonormal system \((x_k)\) in a Banach space \(E\) is called randomly unconditional if there is a constant \(M>0\) such that \[ \int_0^1\Big\| \sum_{k=1}^n c_kr_k(s)x_k\Big\| _E\,ds \leq M \Big\| \sum_{k=1}^nc_kx_k\Big\| _E \] for all \(n=1,2,\dots\) and all scalars \(c_1,\dots,c_n\), where \((r_k)\) is the system of Rademacher functions. In [\textit{A. M. Olevskij}, Am. Math. Soc., Transl., II. Ser. 76, 217--263 (1968; Zbl 0187.33302)] a remarkable uniformly bounded orthonormal system was defined (called the Olevskij system) which is a basis in any \(L_p[0,1]\) for \(1\leq p<\infty\) and in \(C[0,1]\) (although the functions themselves are not in \(C[0,1]\)). As shown in [\textit{K. S. Kazaryan}, Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 119 (161), 278--294 (1982; Zbl 0511.42031)], this system is not unconditional in any \(L_p[0,1]\) unless \(p=2\). In the present paper, a sufficient and a necessary condition on a separable r.i. function space \(E\) are given under which the Olevskij system is randomly unconditional in \(E\). In particular, the Olevskij system is randomly unconditional in \(L_p\) if and only if \(2\leq p<\infty\). Note that there is an unfortunate misprint in both the English and the Russian version of the paper. In the definition of the Olevskij system, the coefficients \(h_i(\xi_j)\) should be replaced by \(h_j(\xi_i)\), see the above-mentioned paper by Olevskij.
