The author generalizes the notion of a frame in Hilbert space to that of a ``representation system'' in a general Banach space. It is well-known that every frame in a Hilbert space can be realized as the image of a Riesz basis under a projection from a larger Hilbert space. By analogy, the author poses and answers the question of when a representation system in some Banach space is the projection of a basis in a larger space. Defining the coefficient space of a representation system to be the space of all sequences of coefficients that yield convergent expansions, several conditions equivalent to the representation system being the desired projection of a basis are given in terms of properties of this coefficient space. In particular, it is shown that this is the case if and only if the subspace consisting of those sequences of coefficients that give the zero expansion is complemented in the coefficient space.
