The paper establishes a general result on Poisson process approximation, presenting the Stein's method from the point of view of Palm theory. The accuracy of the approximation is measured by a Wasserstein pseudometric that generalizes the total variation distance for random variables and the Wasserstein metric for processes. Approximation theorems for Matérn hardcore processes and for marked dependent trials are proved and applied to occupancy problem and rare words in biomolecular sequences.
