The purpose of this volume is to study and classify projective models of complex \(K3\) surfaces \((S,L)\) polarized by a base point free and big line bundle \(L\) such that all smooth curves in \(| L| \) have non-general Clifford index, i.e. Cliff\((S,L)<\lfloor {\frac{{g - 1}}{2}} \rfloor \), where the definition of Cliff\((S,L)\) rests on a result of \textit{M. Green} and \textit{R. Lazarsfeld} [Invent. Math. 89, 357--370 (1987; Zbl 0625.14022)] which states that, for a base point free and big line bundle \(L\) on a \(K3\) surface, Cliff\((C)\) is constant for all smooth irreducible curves \(C \in | L| \). Such models are in a natural way contained in rational normal scrolls and are special in moduli in the sense that they do not represent the general member in the countable union of \(19\)-dimensional families of polarized \(K3\) surfaces. Chapter I gives a useful outline map of the content of the book, with reference to results quoted from other sources and a complete description of all new results obtained by the authors. Together with the results of Mukai, the authors are able to classify and describe all projective models of \(K3\) surfaces of genus \(g=1+\frac{L^{2}}{2}\leq 10\). The introduction that precedes each chapter helps the reader to have a clear idea of the content of the text. A great effort was made by the authors to give as complete a treatment as possible of this beautiful area. This work can be considered as the natural continuation of the study done by \textit{B. Saint-Donat} [Am. J. Math. 96, 602--639 (1974; Zbl 0301.14011)] on linear systems on \(K3\) surfaces. Let me add that I find very nice the description, in chapter IX, of the projective models for low Clifford index \(c=1,2,3\), where in the particular cases \(c=1,2\) the authors prove that the projective models are complete intersections in their corresponding scrolls. The final chapter gives some useful applications to Calabi-Yau threefolds and analogies with Enriques surfaces.
