The title of the book appropriately reflects its content. The book can be separated into two parts. The first part is concerned with the basic equations of fluid mechanics. The second part is a rather broad introduction to numerical methods for partial differential equations. The topics covered in the first part are general principles and conservation laws, inviscid fluid dynamics including the most common classical results on wing theory and potential flow, compressible inviscid flows, and the equations of viscous incompressible flows in various formulations. In the second part an overview of numerical discretization methods together with the classification of PDE's is given. Succeedingly, chapters are devoted to finite differences, finite elements and boundary elements, finite volumes, and spectral methods. Matlab codes are scattered in the text to illustrate either a convenient solution of some flow problems, occasionally using one of the ODE solvers provided by Matlab, or to illustrate the effect of certain discretization schemes. Owing to the wide scope, the present book must necessarily be limited to an introduction and an overview. The presentation of the material and the style of writing are suitable for mathematically inclined physicists and engineers. 161 references are provided as sources or for further study, quite a number of them in Romanian.
