Let \(M\) be a compact complex manifold of dimension \(n\geq 3\). A Hermitian metric on \(M\) with fundamental form \(\omega\) is called balanced if \(d\omega^{n-1}=0\). Assume that \(Y\) is an analytic set in \(M\) of codimension at least two. There is a conjecture saying that in this situation any Kähler metric on \(M\backslash Y\) can be extended to a balanced metric on \(M\). The authors verify this conjecture for dim \(M=3\) and \(Y\) a smooth curve. The proof uses the cohomological theory of currents and completes former results of the authors [see C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 320, No. 12, 1517--1522 (1995; Zbl 0842.32024) and Math. Nachr. 207, 21--59 (1999; Zbl 0944.32018)].
