This short paper is a contribution to the field of comparison methods and results in Riemannian geometry. A nice example of such a result is the well-known comparison theorem of Bishop-Günther-Cheeger-Gromov for the volume of geodesic balls. See [\textit{A. Gray}, Tubes (Redwood City, CA: Addison-Wesley) (1990; Zbl 0692.53001)]. This classical result is based on a first-order differential inequality. In the note under consideration the author derives a linear second order inequality for Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvature bounded above and hence is related to convexity of the associated ratio of volumes. The result obtained here implies the classical result which relates to the non-increasing or non-decreasing character of the ratio function. The technique uses the usual Jacobi and Riccati differential equations.
