Let \(W\), \(V\) be normed linear spaces and \({\mathcal L} (W,V)\) the space of continuous linear operators from \(W\) into \(V\) equipped with the operator norm. The author first proves a Kolmogorov type characterization of best approximation for given \(L\in {\mathcal L} (W,V)\) by elements of the finite dimensional subspace \({\mathcal V}\). Then he gives a necessary condition for a subspace \({\mathcal V}\) to be a non-Chebyshev subspace. Finally he shows that for finite dimensional Chebyshev subspaces \({\mathcal V}\) of \({\mathcal K} (c_0)\), the space of compact operators in \(c_0\), each \(L\in {\mathcal K} (c_0)\) has a strongly unique best approximation in \({\mathcal V}\).
