The mixing in a spatially periodic flow perturbed by a time-dependent flow is studied on the basis of a kinematic model, and the relation between global mixing coefficients and governing parameters of the model is discussed. The particle spreading in the kinematic model is investigated by means of the analysis of perturbed Hamiltonian systems. In the case of small perturbations, Melnikov's method is used to find characteristics of the lobe structure at the cell boundary. For strong perturbations, the method of orbit expansions is applied, resulting in an analytical approximation of the Poincaré map. As a result, the non- monotonic relation between mixing coefficients and model parameters is obtained.
