In 1974, \textit{S. Lang} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 80, 779-787 (1974; Zbl 0298.14014)] conjectured that there are only finitely many dominant meromorphic mappings from a compact complex space to a hyperbolic compact complex space. This generalises the classical de Franchis theorem which asserts that there are only finitely many dominant rational mappings from an algebraic variety to a curve of genus greater than one. (Dominant means that the image contains a nonempty open set.) Various cases of Lang's conjecture were proved by S. Kobayashi, T. Ochiai, T. Urata, M. Kalka, B. Shiffman, B. Wong, and C. Horst. In 1992, \textit{J. Noguchi} [Int. J. Math. 3, 277-289 (1992; Zbl 0759.32016)] proved the conjecture in complete generality. In the article under review, the author considers the case when the target space is complete hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded in an irreducible compact complex space as a Zariski open subset. He proves the finiteness result for this case (as conjectured by Noguchi). This is an interesting variation on Noguchi's result, proved by means of the machinery developed by Noguchi. The author also obtains results on hyperbolic fibre spaces in the noncompact setting (also along the lines conjectured by Lang).
