Let \({\mathcal A} \subset \mathbb{R}^2\) be a domain with area \(|{\mathcal A}|\) and maximal radius of curvature \(\rho= \rho ({\mathcal A})\) on its (smooth) boundary. The object of the paper under review is the error term in the asymptotic formula for the number of lattice points inside \({\mathcal A}\) with coprime coordinates excluding the origin. Utilizing the inclusion-exclusion-principle, a skillful sum-split-up argument and well-known order results concerning the summatory function of the Möbius \(\mu\)-function, the author derives the mean value theorem \[ P({\mathcal A})= {6\over \pi^2} |{\mathcal A}|+ \begin{cases} O_\varepsilon (\rho \exp(- (\log \rho)^{{3\over 5}- \varepsilon})),\\ O_\varepsilon (\rho^{{14 \over 15}+ \varepsilon}), \text{ assuming Riemann hypothesis (RH)}, \end{cases} \] with arbitrary fixed \(\varepsilon> 0\). \{Reviewer's remark: The sharpest conditional result is due to \textit{B. Z. Moroz} [Monatsh. Math. 99, 37-42 (1985; Zbl 0551.10038)], which itself is now superseded by a result of \textit{M. N. Huxley} and \textit{W. G. Nowak} [Primitive lattice points in planar domains, Acta Arith. 76, No. 3, 271-283 (1996)]\}.
