The articles of this volume will be reviewed individually. The Oji seminar started with two key-note addresses, one by \textit{V. F. R. Jones} on ``Spin models in knot theory and von Neumann algebras'' and by \textit{A. Jaffe} on ``Where quantum theory has led''. The subsequent Kyoto symposium was also held on the occasion of Huzihiro Araki's 60th birthday. Chapter headings: 1) Quantum field theory, 2) Statistical and solid state physics, 3) Quantum groups, 4) Subfactors and index theory, 5) Operator algebras and related topics. A postscript contains lists of selected papers of Prof. Araki in 1950-1976 (37 items) and the names of 8 former students.
