Let \(G\) be a finite \(\pi\)-separable group for a fixed set of primes \(\pi\). Let \(I_\pi(G)\) denote the set of Isaacs' \(\pi\)-Brauer characters and \(B_\pi(G)\) be the subset of \(\text{Irr}(G)\) providing a canonical lift for the elements of \(I_\pi (G)\) as described by \textit{I. M. Isaacs} [J. Algebra 86, 98-128 (1984; Zbl 0526.20006)]. If \(\chi\in B_\pi(G)\) and \(H\) is a Hall \(\pi\)-subgroup of \(G\) the minimal degree constituents of \(\chi_H\) are called Fong characters of \(H\) associated with \(\chi\) (or Fong characters associated with \(G\)). Let \(\alpha\) be a member of \(\text{Irr}(H)\) with \(\alpha\) a Fong character for \(G\). Then \(\alpha\) is said to be subnormally Fong if every irreducible constituent of \(\alpha_{S\cap H}\) is Fong in \(S\), for all \(S\) subnormal in \(G\). The purpose of this paper is to construct an example which shows that a key theorem of \textit{E. Poimenidou} [J. Algebra 151, 192-217 (1992; Zbl 0778.20006)] is false, thereby invalidating the main result of that paper. Thus the question remains open as to whether every element of \(B_\pi(G)\), where \(\pi\) is a set of prime numbers and \(G\) is a finite \(\pi\)- separable group, has a subnormally Fong character associated with it.
