On the base of a thermodynamic approach, phase transitions of elastoplastic materials are studied in the presence of dissipation. Criteria are derived and formulated for the production as well as for the non-disappearance of the new phase and for the propagation of the interface both for the small and for the finite strain cases. Then these general rules are applied to phase transitions from austenite to martensite.
