An abstract framework is developed for a one-dimensional dynamic mathematical model of structural phase transitions in shape memory alloys with thermodynamic potentials of the Landau-Ginzburg type. The system of the partial differential equations which define the model is transformed into a semilinear Cauchy problem in an appropriate Hilbert space. It is shown that the differential operator \(A(q)\) which is corresponding to the linear part of the system generates an exponentially stable analytical semigroup \(T(t;q)\). The spectral decompositions for \(A(q)\) and \(T(t,q)\) are determined and explicit decay rates for \(T(t;q)\) are given in terms of the physical constants of the model. It is shown that the nonlinear part of the system is Lipschitz in the state variable with respect to the norm of the graph of \(A(q)\), which leads to a proof of local existence of solutions. It is proved that the semigroup \(T(t;q)\) depends continuously on the parameter \(q\). The applied framework is particularly appropriate for parameter identification and also for studying the asymptotic behavior of the system. A forthcoming paper of the author deals with the numerical approximations for the solutions of the system of equations derived.
