The theorem in the title was proved for real matrices by \textit{M. A. Berger} and \textit{Y. Wang} [ibid. 166, 21-27 (1992; Zbl 0818.15006)], using results from the theory of rings. In the present paper the theorem is proved by tools from analysis and geometry (convexity) as well as by some elementary results from the Berger-Wang paper.
