Supertauberian operators were introduced by \textit{D. G. Tacon} [J. Aust. Math. Soc. 34, Ser. A, 60-70 (1983; Zbl 0531.47011)] as an intermediate class between upper semi-Fredholm operators and Tauberian operators. Here we prove the following perturbative characterization: `An operator \(T: X\to Y\) is supertauberian if and only if, for every compact operator \(K: X\to Y\), the kernel \(N(T+ K)\) is superreflexive'. As an application, we characterize Banach spaces whose reflexive subspaces are superreflexive, and Banach spaces whose superreflexive subspaces are finite-dimensional. We prove also a perturbative characterization for cosupertauberian operators and characterize Banach spaces whose reflexive quotients are superreflexive, or whose superreflexive quotients are finite-dimensional. Ultraproduct techniques are underlying in the main proofs.
