The author considers the existence of weak solutions for the following Dirichlet boundary value problem: \[ Au \equiv \sum^ n_{i = 1} D_ i \biggl[ \bigl( | u |^ r + | u |^ s \bigr) D_ iu \biggr] = f(x), \quad u |_ s = 0, \tag{1} \] where the positive numbers \(r\) and \(s\) are chosen arbitrarily. He introduces an operator \(\Phi_{r,s} (u) = (rH)^{- 1} | u |^ ru + (s + 1)^{- 1} | u |^ su\) and a metric space \(M^{r,s} (\Omega) \equiv \{u; \Phi_{r,s} (u) \in W_ 2^{0,1}(\Omega)\}\) and proves that the operator \(A\) generated by the boundary value problem (1) defines a homeomorphism of \(M^{r,s} (\Omega)\) onto \(W_ 2^{-1} (\Omega)\). Therefore, problem (1) has a unique solution \(u \in M^{r,s} (\Omega)\), which can be considered as a weak solution of the problem (1). The above results are also established for a general elliptic equation with degeneration.
