The authors study oscillation properties of solutions of the nonlinear second order differential inequality \((*)\) \((q(t) (p(t)y)')' + h(t,y) \leq r(t)\), where \(p,q\) are positive functions, the nonlinearity \(h\) is positive and nondecreasing in the second variable, \(r\) is a continuous function. It is shown that under certain additional assumptions equation \((*)\) possesses no eventually positive solution. This statement is then used to establish an oscillation criterion for nonlinear Schrödinger equation \((**)\) \(\Delta u + C(x,u) = f(x)\). The results of the paper extend criteria for nonexistence of positive solutions of \((*)\) and \((**)\) given e.g. in [\textit{T. Kusano} and \textit{M. Naito}, Can. Math. Bull. 25, 71-77 (1982; Zbl 0488.35007)].
