Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field and \(K= k(C)\) the rational function field of a smooth projective curve \(C\) defined over \(k\). Let \(\Gamma/K\) be a smooth curve of genus \(g>0\) defined over \(K\) with a \(K\)-rational point \(O\in \Gamma (K)\) and let \(J_\Gamma /K\) denote the Jacobian variety of \(\Gamma/K\). The Mordell-Weil group of \(\Gamma /K\) is the group of \(K\)-rational points \(J_\Gamma (K)\). A relatively minimal fibration \(f:X \to C\) can be associated to given \(\Gamma/K\). By using the results of G. Xiao, K. Konno and S.-L. Tan on the fibrations of curves, the author shows that if \(X\) is a rational surface, \(f\) is a fibration of genus \(g \geq 1\) over a rational curve \(C\), then rank \(J_\Gamma (K) \leq 4g +4\). Furthermore, if \(g \geq 2\) and rank \(J_\Gamma (K) = 4g+4\), then the fibration \(f\) can be obtained as a blowing up of a linear pencil of hyperelliptic curves on the Hirzebruch surface \(\Sigma_e\) with \(0\leq e \leq g\), and the Mordell-Weil lattice is unique up to isometries.
