The existence of nontrivial solutions of the equation (1) \(- \Delta u + q(x)u - \lambda u = g(x,u)\), \(x \in \mathbb{R}^N\), is proved, where the linear part of (1) is indefinite and \(g\) is of subcritical growth. The authors consider two cases: \(g\) is superlinear and \(g\) is asymptotically linear. The proof uses a linking theorem of \textit{V. Benci} and \textit{P. H. Rabinowitz} [Invent. Math. 52, 241-273 (1979; Zbl 0465.49006)].
