The paper discusses the structure preserving character of some numerical methods with variable steps for ordinary differential equations. Special emphasis is laid on reversible equations as defined in the paper. The main results concern the conditions under which variable stepsize numerical integrators are reversible, too. The advantages of the proposed methods are illustrated by numerical experiments on Kepler's problem.
