The paper is a self contained, well written presentation of most important methods of set-theory for topologists (which the reviewer would warmly recommend to any mathematician willing to become acquainted with most subtle methods of set-theory in a readable form). The paper deals with combinatorial principles, elementary submodels, large cardinals and iterated forcing applied to topological problems and to problems of real analysis and presents many difficult proofs of results of Fedorchuk, Simon, Blass, Shelah, Avraham, Todorčević (to mention at least some of them). The paper contains also new results on failure of preservation of first countable non-Lindelöf or nonseparable spaces under cardinal preserving forcing.
