The author studies (in a \(C^\theta\)-setting), the nonlinear integro- differential equation \[ {d\over {dt}} \Biggl( k_0 u(t)+ \int_{- \infty}^t k_1 (t- s) u(s) ds) \Biggr)+ k_\infty u(t)= Au(t)+ G(u (t))+ F(t), \;t\in \mathbb{R} \tag{1} \] in a general Banach space \(X\). Assuming that the operator \(A+G\) is dissipative and that some growth conditions on \(G\) are met, he proves global existence and Hölder regularity of the solutions of (1). The abstract results obtained are then applied to discuss the existence in the large and Hölder regularity of the solution of the problem \[ {\partial \over {\partial t}} \Biggl( k_0 u(t, x)+ \int_{-\infty}^t k_1 (t- s) u(s, x)ds \Biggr)+ k_\infty u(t, x)= \] \[ = c_0 \Delta u(t, x)+ g(x, u(t, x), \nabla u(t, x))+ f(t, x), \] \(t\in \mathbb{R}\), \(x\in \Omega\), \(u(t, x)=0\), \(t\in \mathbb{R}\), \(x\in \partial \Omega\), which arises as a model for nonlinear heat conduction in materials of fading memory type. In the proof, a continuation method is used.
