    This paper generalizes the Poisson summation formula to a class of complete infinite volume manifolds. That summation formula relates the trace of \(e^{\text{it}\root m\of P}\) to the eigenvalues of \(P\), an \(m\)th order elliptic differential operator on a compact manifold without boundary. The author has studied the Laplacian \(\Delta\) on a compact manifold \(X\) with boundary and exact \(b\)-metric; it means a class of manifolds which have asymptotically cylindrical ends are considered. It is shown that \[ \begin{aligned}{\mathcal F}^{- 1}[\text{b-Tr}(\cos(t \sqrt\Delta))](\lambda) & = {1\over 2} \sum_{\lambda^2_j\in \text{pp Spec } \Delta} \delta(\lambda- \lambda_j)+ {1\over 4\pi i} {d\over d\lambda}\log \text{det } \Psi(\lambda)+\\ & + {1\over 8} \sum _{\substack{ \sigma^2_k\in \text{spec} \Delta_{\partial X}\\ \sigma_k\neq 0}} \delta(\lambda- \sigma_k)+ {1\over 4}\text{ Tr } \Psi(0)\delta(\lambda),\end{aligned} \] where \({\mathcal F}^{- 1}\) is the inverse Fourier transform, b-Tr is a regularization of the integral of the restriction of the Schwartz kernel to the diagonal, and \(\Psi\) is the scattering matrix. The first term is analogous to the case of a compact manifold without boundary, and the rest are similar to terms in a trace formula for one-dimensional scattering.
