For a given polynomial \(f(x)\in \mathbb{C}[ x]\), \textit{S. P. Smith} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 322, 285--314 (1990; Zbl 0732.16019)] has studied the representation theory of the associated algebra \(R_f\) over \(\mathbb{C}\) generated by \(A\), \(B\), \(H\) with relations \([H, A]= A\), \([H, B]= -B\), and \([A, B]= f(H)\). The enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sl}_2\) is just one of the special cases of the algebra \(R_f\). The authors study the representation theory of the algebra \(R_f\) in the category \(\mathcal O\) analogous to the category \(\mathcal O\) for the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sl}_2\). A few of the main results can be described as follows. (i) The extensions between any two Verma modules in the category \(\mathcal O\) for the algebra \(R_f\) are described for general \(f(x)\). (ii) The module structure for all projective modules in the category \(\mathcal O\) for \(R_f\) is described. (iii) Self-extension of irreducible finite-dimensional simple modules in the category of all finite-dimensional modules (not always a subcategory of the category \(\mathcal O\)) is described. (iv) Extensions between other types of highest weight modules are also described. Many of the results are similar to those for the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sl}_2\) with a few exceptions. This paper provides interesting examples of representation theories closely related to the representation theories of Lie algebras.
