This paper is a real contribution to the theory of phase transition in solids. The authors examine the stress elongation response of a bar contained in a constant temperature environment and undergoing a thermoelastic phase transition. After an introduction in the subject and an outline of the theoretical framework, the authors present a particular constitutive model which they use as an example for detailed calculations choosing for the free energy the function constructed by the second author and \textit{J. K. Knowles} [J. Mech. Phys. Solids 41, 541-571 (1993)]. Some features are described of the finite difference method used to solve the differential equations governing the model, and very detailed interpretations of the results obtained are made.
