Let \(q\) be a real-valued continuous function on \([a, b]\) and let \(\{\varphi(x, \lambda_n)\}^\infty_1\) be the orthogonal system associated to the differential equation \[ y''+ [\lambda- q(x)]y= 0, \] with the end conditions \[ y(a, \lambda)= \sin \alpha,\;y'(a, \lambda)= - \cos \alpha,\;y(b, \lambda)= \sin\beta,\;y'(b, \lambda)= -\cos \beta. \] The eigenvalues \(\lambda_1< \lambda_2<\cdots\) are the zeros, all real and simple, of a certain entire function \(\omega(\lambda)\) independent of \(x\). The purpose of this paper is to present a new family of orthogonal functions \(\{\vartheta(x, \mu_n)\}^\infty_1\) associated with the inhomogeneous differential equation \[ y''+ [\lambda- q(x)] y= \omega(\lambda) w(x), \] with the end conditions \[ y(a)\cos \alpha+ y'(a)\sin \alpha= 0,\;y(b)\cos \beta+ y'(b)\sin \beta= 0. \] The eigenvalues \(\mu_1< \mu_2<\cdots\) are the zeros of an entire function \(m(x)\), independent of \(x\), and that like \(\omega(\lambda)\) has only real and simple zeros. The pointwise convergence of the expansion of a function \(f\in L(a, b)\) in terms of the functions \(\vartheta(x, \mu_n)\) is discussed.
