By considering the appropriate functional spaces, the authors prove a generalized Green-Gauss theorem (what they call integral-gradient theorem) for domains which may exhibit nonclassical deformation fields such as during the formation of macroscopic fractures and the occurence of microscopic changes in structures (microfractures). This makes use of the notion of ``fit region'' introduced by \textit{W. Noll} and \textit{E. G. Virga} [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 102, No. 1, 1-21 (1988; Zbl 0668.73005)] and that of functions of bounded variation. The paper extends the developments of a previous work on ``structured deformations'' by the same authors [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 124, 99-155 (1993)]. This relates to the foundations of continuum mechanics.
