The main result of the paper states that a vector bundle \(F\) on a projective nodal curve \(Y\) is associated to a representation \(\zeta\) of the fundamental group \(\pi_1 (Y)\) if and only if its pull back to the normalization \(X\) of \(Y\) is a direct sum of the indecomposable vector bundles of degree 0. If the restriction of \(\zeta\) to \(\pi_1 (X)\) is unitary (resp., irreducible unitary) then \(\Gamma\) is semistable (resp., stable). However, unlike in the case of nonsingular curves [cf. \textit{M. S. Narasimhan} and \textit{C. S. Seshadri}, Ann. Math., II. Ser. 82, 540-567 (1965; Zbl 0171.04803)], a stable vector bundle of degree 0 on \(Y\) may not be associated to a representation of \(\pi_1 (Y)\). The author constructs many examples of such bundles in the case \(g(X)\geq 1\). As a technical tool, the author uses quasiparabolic bundles on \(X\).
