Let \(\pi : \mathbb{P} (\Omega_R) \to R\) be the projectivised cotangent bundle of a smooth projective surface \(R\) of general type. Denote by \(L\) the (tautological) line bundle on \(\mathbb{P} (\Omega_R)\) which satisfies \(\pi_* (L) = \Omega_R\). In case \(L\) is nef and \(K^2_R > 2c_2 (R)\), \textit{T. Luo} [Manuscr. Math. 79, No. 3-4, 299-306 (1993; Zbl 0806.14028)] has recently proved that \(|nL |\) has no horizontal fixed component for large values of \(n\), that is, no fixed component mapping surjectively onto \(R\). In this paper we show that the assumption that \(L\) is nef can be dropped for irregular surfaces. More precisely, if \(\alpha : R \to \text{Alb} (R)\) stands for the Albanese map of \(R\), we prove: (i) if the image of \(\alpha\) is a surface then \(|L |\) has no horizontal fixed component; (ii) if the image of \(\alpha\) is a curve and \(K^2_R \geq 2 c_2 (R)\) then \(|nL |\) has no horizontal fixed component for large values of \(n\).
