The subgroup structure and \(\text{mod }2\) cohomology of O'Nan's sporadic simple group (Q1899097)

This is the first of two papers in which the authors determine the mod 2 cohomology ring \(H^*(O'N,F_2)\) of the sporadic simple group \(O'N\). Here they get very detailed information about the 2-local structure of \(O'N\) which is needed for the cohomology calculation. The authors describe the lattice of elementary abelian 2-subgroups in \(O'N\) and construct a simplicial complex associated to this lattice which allows them to reduce the determination of \(H^*(O'N,F_2)\) to the analysis of a fairly small number of subgroups and their common intersections.
