A Leibniz pair \((A,L)\) consists of an associative algebra \(A\) and a Lie algebra \(L\) over a common ring \(k\), together with a Lie algebra morphism \(\mu : L \to \text{Der} A\), where \(\text{Der} A\) denotes the Lie algebra of \(k\)-derivations of \(A\) onto itself. The authors develop a cohomology theory for Leibniz pairs, constructing a double complex where the vertical coboundary operators \(C^{p, q} \to C^{p + 1, q}\) define Hochschild cohomology. In the horizontal direction, they use Chevalley-Eilenberg coboundary \(\delta_{CE} C^{p, q} \to C^{p, q + 1}\). Afterwards the authors describe the double complex for a Poisson algebra (a special case of Leibniz pairs) which is obtained by a slight modification of the above complex: the lowest vertical coboundary is now a ``Poisson coboundary'' and one row is erased. These cohomology theories enable the development of a deformation theory for Leibniz pairs and for Poisson algebras, extending the deformation theory introduced in 1964 by Gerstenhaber for associative algebras. As expected, the cohomology controls the deformations: 1) an infinitesimal deformation of \((A,L)\) is defined by a Hochschild 2-cocycle of \(A\) and a Chevalley-Eilenberg 2-cocycle of \(L\) with coefficients in \(L\). 2) Generally, there is an obstruction in the third cohomology group. The paper contains some open questions, in particular on the existence of a Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the cohomology of Leibniz pairs.
