Given a simple Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\), the authors consider the orbits in \({\mathfrak g}^*\) which are of \(R\)-matrix type, i.e. possess a Poisson pencil generated by the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau bracket and the so-called \(R\)-matrix bracket. An algebra quantizing the latter bracket is called a quantum orbit of \(R\)-matrix type. The symmetric orbits of \(SL (n)/S (L(n - 1) \times L(1))\) type in \(sl(n)^*\) are described explicitly. A quantization \(A^c_{h,q}\) of the whole Poisson pencil on these orbits is constructed. The presentation of \(A^c_{h,q}\) by generators and relations involves a \(q\)-deformed Lie bracket. The algebras \(A^c_{h,q}\) live in the category of \(U_q (sl(n))\)-modules. The parameter \(h\) corresponds to the quantization of the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau bracket (in particular, the reduced Sklyanin-Drinfeld bracket is a member of the pencil in this case), while \(c\) labels the orbit (the case \(c = 0\) corresponds to the highest weight orbit). The notions of braided coadjoint vector field, and tangent vector fields are discussed.
