The author gives a state-of-art description of the abstract multigrid package MADPACK (Multigrid-Aggregation-Disaggregation-PACKage). The package provides basic routines that allow us to build abstract multigrid methods for solving linear and nonlinear systems, possibly arizing from partial differential equations, possibly not. The author discusses three versions of the package, namely versions 2, 4, and 5. Version 2 is available through anonymous ftp from casper.cs.yale.edu in the directory mgnet/madpack2. The advantages and disadvantages of the use of FORTRAN, C, and C++ are also discussed. The author favours a mixed language programming approach.
