The author investigates Wiener-Hopf operators on \(L^2 (\mathbb{R})\) which can be defined by the formula \(R_\varphi f = P {\mathcal F}^{-1} M_\Phi {\mathcal F} P_+\) where \(P_+\) is the operator of multiplication by the Heaviside unit step function, \({\mathcal F}\) is the Fourier transform operator, \(\varphi\) is in \(L^p\) for \(p \in [1,2]\) and vanishes in \(\mathbb{R}^+\), and \(\Phi = {\mathcal F} \varphi \in L^{p'}\) for \(p' = p/(p - 1)\). It is proved that the operator \(R_\varphi\) is a densely defined closed operator which is bounded iff \(\Phi \in L^\infty\). The description of the operator adjoint of \(R_\varphi\) and the spectrum of both \(R_\varphi\) and its adjoint is given as well. Let \(\Phi^*\) be the Fourier transform of \(\Phi (-x)\). The main result of the article reads: If \(\varphi\) is nontrivial then in order that \(R_\varphi\) be injective it is both necessary and sufficient that the function \(\Phi^*\) be an outer function of Hardy space \(H^{p'}\). For the function \(\varphi\) from some class an inversion formula is provided and as an example of \(R_\varphi\) with such a \(\varphi\) the incomplete Abel transform is investigated.
