The author reviews the basic facts about Shukla cohomology of algebras and proves the following theorem, which is a generalization of Hochschild's version of the principal theorem, with Shukla's cohomology replacing Hochschild's. Theorem: If \(A\) is a \(k\)-algebra with \(J\) a nilpotent ideal such that the quotient algebra \(A/J\) has vanishing second Shukla cohomology groups, i.e., \(HS^2 (A/J, M)= 0\) for every \(A/J\)- bimodule \(M\), then there exists a subalgebra \(S\) in \(A\) such that \(A= S\oplus J\) as \(k\)-modules.
