On Ulam-von Neumann transformations (Q1901792)

Ulam-von Neumann transformations are unimodal self-mappings of the interval conjugate to the Tshebyshev map. The smoothness assumption is piecewise \(C^1\) with a power law singularity at the maximum. The paper examines properties of Ulam-von Neumann maps. In particular, a smooth conjugacy between two of them is proved to exist if an only if all corresponding eigenvalues at periodic points are equal and the singularities are smoothly the same. The main technical idea is to change the coordinate so as to compensate for the singularity at the maximum.
