Let \(G\) be a simply connected simple algebraic group over a field of characteristic 0, with Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\). Let \(B^\pm\) be opposite Borel subgroups of \(G\). Let \(R_q [G]\), \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\) be respectively the quantized algebra of regular functions of \(G\), and the quantized enveloping algebra of \({\mathfrak g}\). Here \(q\) is an indeterminate; also, \(K\) denotes certain extension of the field \(k(q)\). The universal \(R\)-matrix attached by Drinfeld to (a completion of) \(U_q ({\mathfrak g})\) can be conveniently interpreted as a Hopf algebra pairing \(\psi: R_q [G]\times R_q [G]\to K\). Moreover, \(\psi\) factorizes through a Hopf algebra pairing \(\Phi: R_q [B^-]\times R_q [B^+]\to K\). The main result of this paper shows that any Hopf algebra pairing \(R_q [G]\times R_q [G]\to K\) arises in this way, modulo automorphisms of \(K\) and permuting \(B^+\) and \(B^-\).
