The authors show that a ring in which (a) all right ideals are idempotent, and (b) every maximal essential left ideal is two-sided is von Neumann regular. This answers a question of \textit{R. Yue Chi Ming} [Ric. Mat. 33, 147-158 (1984; Zbl 0577.16011)].
