The paper gives a homological construction for the summands in the Jones representation which have two rows [\textit{V. F. R. Jones}, Ann. Math., II. Ser. 126, 335-388 (1987; Zbl 0631.57005)]. The construction is related to, but more general than that offered by \textit{R. Lawrence} [Commun. Math. Phys. 135, No. 1, 141-191 (1990; Zbl 0716.20022)]. The author's method of constructing representations produces representations with many parameters. It also affords some insight into the faithfulness questions. Editorial remark: The author states that parts of this paper are ``the outcome of joint work with John Moody'', and adds: ``Indeed, the author would have preferred that this be a joint paper, but Moody has steadfastly refused.'' The representations constructed in this paper are often referred to as Long-Moody representations.
