Local fourth-order difference approximations for first and second derivatives are constructed on nonuniform grids in one space dimension. The difference approximations are constructed in order to satisfy important symmetry conditions such that the discrete Laplacian operator results from composing the discrete gradient with the discrete divergence operator. The loss of accuracy on nonuniform grids is analysed and numerical examples show the effectiveness of the discretisation.
